Authentication

Our Authentication Process

At In Style Ascot, trust is at the heart of everything we do.

We understand that authenticity is one of the most important considerations when buying or selling pre-loved designer fashion. Every item accepted by our team is carefully assessed, and selected designer pieces undergo professional authentication before being offered for sale.

We do not knowingly accept or sell counterfeit goods.

How We Assess Items

Our experienced team completes an initial inspection of every item submitted for consignment.

Depending on the brand, value, category and level of risk, our assessment may consider:

  • Materials and craftsmanship

  • Stitching and construction

  • Logos, fonts and brand markings

  • Hardware and engravings

  • Serial numbers, date codes or product identifiers

  • Labels and manufacturing details

  • Shape, measurements and proportions

  • Packaging and supporting documentation

  • Provenance and purchase history

  • Known characteristics of the relevant brand and model

Original receipts, authenticity cards, boxes and dust bags can support the assessment process. However, packaging or paperwork alone does not prove that an item is authentic.

Independent Professional Authentication

Where required, an item will be referred to an independent professional authentication provider.

These specialists may use a combination of expert review, image analysis, brand-specific databases and authentication technology to assess the item.

The appropriate authentication method is selected according to the item’s brand and category.

Not every item will receive a separate certificate. Where an authentication provider produces documentation, this may be made available to the buyer or seller where appropriate.

Authentication Fees for Sellers

Items requiring professional authentication are subject to a £20 authentication fee per item.

If the item sells, this fee will normally be deducted from the seller’s payment.

If the item remains unsold at the end of the consignment period, the authentication fee must be paid before the item is collected or returned.

The authentication fee covers the professional assessment and remains payable regardless of the outcome.

Authentication Outcomes

An item may receive one of the following outcomes:

Authenticated

If the item passes authentication and meets our condition and resale standards, it can proceed to pricing, photography and listing.

Inconclusive

Occasionally, an authentication provider may be unable to reach a conclusive result. This does not necessarily mean that the item is counterfeit; however, we will not list an item unless we are sufficiently confident in its authenticity.

The item may be referred for further assessment or returned to the seller. Authentication costs already incurred will remain payable.

Counterfeit

If an item is confirmed to be counterfeit, it will not be listed or offered for sale.

The seller will be responsible for:

  • The original £20 authentication fee

  • An additional £30 administration and handling fee

The total amount payable will therefore be £50 per counterfeit item.

The item will be handled or returned in accordance with our policies and any applicable legal obligations.

Seller Responsibilities

By submitting an item to In Style Ascot, the seller confirms that:

  • They are the legal owner of the item.

  • They are entitled to offer it for sale.

  • To the best of their knowledge, it is authentic.

  • The information provided about its origin and purchase history is accurate.

  • They have disclosed any repairs, alterations or replacement components.

We reserve the right to decline, remove or refer any item for additional assessment if authenticity concerns arise—even if it was initially accepted.

Authentication and Condition

Authentication and condition are separate considerations.

An authentic item may still show signs of wear, repairs, ageing or previous use. Authentication confirms our assessment of the item’s origin; it does not mean that the item is new, unused or free from imperfections.

We provide photographs and condition information for each item so customers can make an informed decision before purchasing.

Buying With Confidence

When shopping with In Style Ascot, you can expect:

  • Items carefully assessed by our team

  • Professional third-party authentication where required

  • Clear descriptions and condition information

  • Detailed photographs

  • Support from our team before and after purchase

  • Your statutory consumer rights to remain fully protected

If you would like further photographs or information about an item’s authentication or condition, please contact us before purchasing.
